Pears

There are two main varieties of pears, namely the European and the Asian or Nashi Pear. Asian Pears are excellent when picked fresh from the tree, but are generally not long keepers. European pears should be picked when the fruit matures, but before they are ripe and can be stored for a long time in the mature state. Supermarkets sell bland and tasteless pears chosen for their travel and storage capabilities. In reality Pears have a unique texture, aroma and taste.The skins of pears have a vast array of colors, green, yellow, orange, red, and mottled. Pears are rich in dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals. They are excellent for eating out of hand, baking, stewing, juicing and in salads. Pears do not contain cholesterol or fat and are low in calories. Pears are an excellent source of potassium and calcium. These are just a few reason’s why a pear tree is well worth growing in your garden or orchard.
